Spellcaster Pixel Artist Intern (Spell Cards & VFX)
Spellcaster is a Dunedin-based serious game company. We're looking for pixel artists to expand the spell card collection in our game. You'll produce new spell card artwork and the VFX animation that accompanies each card, working within our existing 16-bit visual style.
Spellcaster is a 16-bit adventure game driven by spelling. Schools, speech-language pathologists, and literacy interventionists across New Zealand, Australia, the UK and US use it to run structured spelling practice with learners aged 9 and up.
The game format keeps students engaged in spelling work that would otherwise be repetitive drill, so the art directly shapes how motivating the intervention is.
What you'd do: Brainstorm, design and produce pixel art based spell cards Create short VFX animations to pair with each card Work to a brief and deliver within agreed timeframes
What we're looking for: Comfort with pixel art and frame-based animation Experience with Asesprite Ability to work with in our art style Reliability and good communication
What you'll get out of the internship Experience working in a tight knit dynamic team on a live product used globally Portfolio-ready assets from real production work Potential for ongoing employment or contract work after the internship
The work: 40 hours total across 4 weeks. Hours within that window are negotiable. Paid at $25 NZD per hour.
